| A recent visitor to the site of the Roman Fort Derventio, the Romans invaded us 2000 years ago and built their fort alongside the river, they keep coming back, but they are a pretty friendly bunch these days. |

| Swinton Lawn Bowls Club, just a mile or 2 from Malton, on our way home. We play there too. The man in the red and white shirt is a Swinto member. |

| St. Peters Church is just across the River Derwent in Norton town, this is where we go on a Sunday. |

What a wonderful tour of Market town. A town crier, Scrooge and the counting house, food (very important), beautiful old church and a Roman soldier! What more could one want?!!! Fun!
Thank you for sharing your lovely town with us, it was most enjoyable from the town cryer back to the Roman invasion. It seems such a pleasant place to live and markets always seem to bring people together. A very nice post indeed.

An interesting and old town. "Old" in Australia would not be classified as old in your part of the world.
Hi there - no, Australian Magpies are a different species to UK ones - Oz ones are really a sort of Butcher Bird - and UK Magpies are Crows, just like the Jackdaws in your chimney pots.
We have a number of birds here with Magpie in their name - and surprise, surprise they are all black and white!
Lived for a while in York and taught in Pickering for a while, then uped and moved sticks to Australia - nice to see some of Yorkshire again!

Like the atmosphere of your town : past and present are closely nested! I didn't know you played bowls too! We call it La pétanque, south of France. and the church is a beautiful building!

That's a trip into the past even with a "Town Crier", that at least was romantic ! Today people shout at each other, lol !
PS. I don't know "Sharpe" series. Maybe it has a french title here. Sometimes the titles are not translated litterally. Midsomer murders for example become "Inspecteur Barnaby" and he speaks perfectly french !
